From October 1, 2024, you cannot use an Aadhaar Enrollment ID instead of an Aadhaar number when applying for a PAN (Permanent Account Number). Filing of Income Tax Returns (ITR) requires the same.

Current Rule

Right now if you don’t have an Aadhaar number but have applied for it. You can use your Aadhaar Enrollment ID for PAN applications or in your ITR. This rule started on July 1, 2017.

Reason for this Change

Since 2017, many more people have received their Aadhaar numbers. Almost everyone in India now has an Aadhaar number. Allowing the use of Enrollment ID could lead to people getting multiple PANs or misusing them. Therefore, to prevent this the government decided that they will stop accepting Aadhaar Enrollment IDs for PAN applications and ITRs from October 1, 2024.

What is the New Proposal?

Starting October 1, 2024, you must use your Aadhaar number instead of your Enrollment ID for PAN applications and ITRs. If you have a PAN using an Enrollment ID, you need to provide your Aadhaar number. This must be done by a date that will be announced later.

What is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number given to residents of India. It serves as proof of identity and address. The Aadhaar Enrollment ID (EID) is a 28-digit number. It is given to each person when they apply for an Aadhaar number.

How to Recover Your Aadhaar Enrollment ID

If you need to find your Aadhaar Enrollment ID, you can do so by checking the acknowledgement slip given to you when you applied for your Aadhaar. This slip contains your unique 28-digit Enrollment ID.

Conclusion

The new rule to discontinue the use of Aadhaar Enrollment IDs for PAN applications and ITRs aims to prevent duplication and misuse. From October 1, 2024, individuals must use an Aadhaar number. Those who obtained their PAN using an Enrollment ID should update their information by the future notified date. This change reflects increased coverage of Aadhaar numbers across India. Making sure a more secure and easy process.
