NTA Generated Rs. 3514 Crore from Examination Fees; Income Increased 78% After CUET

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has generated Rs.3,513.98 crore since its inception in 2018 and spent 87.2% of it, or Rs 3,064.77 crore, on exam administration, according to government data shared with parliament on Wednesday. With the introduction of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in 2022-23, NTA’s earnings soared by 78%, rising from Rs.490.35 crore in 2021-22 to Rs.873.20 crore.

The minister of state (MoS) for education, Sukanta Majumdar, responded to issues posed by Madhya Pradesh Congress MP Vivek K Tankha by stating that the NTA was founded in 2018 and is “self-supporting through the examination fee” that candidates pay.

NTA has continuously kept a positive net balance every year, with the exception of 2018–19.

Exam fees generated a significant boost in NTA’s revenue starting in 2022. In 2023–24, NTA’s earnings climbed by 22% to Rs.1,065.38 crore over the previous year, a 78% increase from Rs 490.35 crore to Rs. 873.20 crore. In 2022–2023 the earnings of coaching centers increased by 53.26% to 4,667.03 crore from Rs.3,045.12 crore in 2021–2022.

NTA Examinations:

Teachers expressed concern about the delay in academic sessions caused by the agency’s late announcement of results, despite the fact that NTA conducted CUET-UG for the third time in 2024. After a retest of 1203 candidates, NTA released the CUET results in the final week of July. CUET UG 2024 was conducted in May.

The three most important college entrance exams are administered by NTA: the Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) for engineering, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) for medical, and the CUET-UG.

In addition to a few private, state, and deemed universities, CUET-UG is administered for admission to undergraduate programs in central universities. 13,47,820 individuals applied for CUET UG in 2024; 26079 applied for NEET; and fourteen,76557 applied for JEE Main.

NTA Participants:

Under the central staffing plan, the union government chose the director general of NTA, which is now a self-sustaining organization.

The percentage of women and SCs among employees on deputation is 17.3% and 13%, respectively.

Within the Department of Higher Education within the Ministry of Education, one employee has been absorbed into NTA.
