The Indian Express stated that the central government is considering organizing a second board examination for Class 12 students studying in Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools in June 2026, as proposed by the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE).

Currently, a CBSE Class 12 student takes a board exam once a year in February or March. After the Class 12 board test results are announced in May, students can choose to retake one subject in July during “supplementary exams” if their grades are below expectations. The “supplementary exams” this year took place on 15th July.

To lessen the burden on students, the recently adopted National Education Policy 2020 suggests switching from large-scalp exams with multiple choice questions to biennial board exams.

The education government has requested that the CBSE produce a proposal for conducting two board exams for class 12 pupils annually starting in 2026, in compliance with NEP 2020, according to The Indian Express.

The report also stated that the two-board test system is expected to have its first exam in February or March and its second set of exams in June. In addition, rather than currently being limited to taking one subject, Class 12 students may choose to sit for “improvement exams” or “supplementary exams” in any or all courses.

This second round of board exams would take around 15 days to administer, and the results would be announced by the CBSE in approximately a month. Accordingly, results for tests administered in June will probably be released in August.

The administration has additionally suggested that the first board exam not be held before February, taking into account the dates of admission exams and the workload of teachers for marking. In order to lighten the weight of teacher evaluations, the Center also anticipates that some students will not show up for the second board examinations.

According to the NCFSE, which is based on the National Education Policy 2020, every student should have the chance to sit for the board exams twice a year, with the highest score being taken into account.

The NCFSE states that “in the long run, the ability to take a subject board examination right after the’school term’ (also known as semester-wise’ or ‘on-demand’ board examinations) will be made available.”
