In a recent regulatory filing on Thursday, Vodafone Idea revealed that the GST additional commissioner’s office in Chandigarh slapped a hefty penalty of Rs. 13.16 crore on the telecom giant.

The order, dated January 10, charges the indebted company with wrongful transition of CENVAT credit to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

The regulatory filing stated, “Order passed under Section 74 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, inter alia, levying a penalty of Rs. 13,16,53,661.”

Vodafone Idea (VIL) admitted that the most significant financial impact was the tax demand, interest, and penalty levied.

VIL expressed dissatisfaction with the order, stating, “The Company does not agree with the Order and will take necessary legal action(s) for rectification/ reversal of the same.”

The order issued by the Office of the Additional Commissioner, Central Goods and Service Tax in Chandigarh, highlights the rising scrutiny that firms undergo in maintaining compliance with the complex GST laws.

As Vodafone Idea navigates this regulatory obstacle, the telecom giant remains strong in its determination to seek legal relief for what it considers an unjust punishment.
