36th GST Council meeting today; may cut tax on e-vehicles, rationalise tax on lottery

The 36th meeting of the GST Council to be held on 25.7.2019

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will chair the 36th meeting of the GST Council through video conferencing in Delhi today.

Among other issues, the GST Council is expected to announce its decision on lowering tax rates for electric vehicles, solar power projects and rationalisation of GST rates on lottery.

Decisions to be taken in 36th GST council meeting

GST rates on electronic vehicles

After several announcement for electronic vehicle(EV) sector including income tax exemption and reduction in custom duties for certain components, the government is now expected to push for a GST rate cut on EVs from 12% to 5%.

with this the government wants to encourage domestic manufacturing of e-vehicles. GST rate for petrol and diesel cars and hybrid vehicles is already at the highest bracket of 28% plus cess. the council will also decide tax structure on solar power projects.

GST rates on lottery

The Council may also look at taxation of lotteries. In the previous meeting, the Council had decided to seek legal opinion of the Attorney General for levying GST. Currently, a state-organised lottery attracts 12% GST, while a state-authorised lottery attracts 28% tax .

Last GST Council meeting:

The last meeting of the GST Council was held on June 21 where Due date of filing GST Annual Return GSTR9, GSTR9A & GSTR9C extended by 2 months.

10% penalty introduced for non payment within 30 days in case of Anti-profiteering and also approved use Aadhaar for registration on GSTN.
