Bank Mitra Urges Income Tax Department to Withdraw the Rs 19,530 Demand Towards the Receipt of TDS Refund

A Bank Mitra from Uttar Pradesh has requested the Income Tax Department to withdraw an income tax demand raised against him, claiming that he has only received a TDS refund.

Ashish Dwivedi lives in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh and works as a Bank Mitra (Business Correspondent Agent) with the Punjab National Bank, Branch Indamau. The Role of Bank Mitra is to provide essential banking services in rural and semi-urban areas, acting as a mini-branch.

In a post shared on platform X, Dwivedi shared an official communication issued by the PNB, Branch Indamau, which confirmed his role as a Bank Mitra and stated that all the transactions between 1st April 2023 and 31st March 2024 were done for the bank customers.

He said that being a Bank Mitra, he is poor and cannot afford to pay the demand. He further mentioned that he cannot even reply to the demand as the lawyer has asked for Rs 10,000 to respond to the demand, which is again unaffordable for him.

The Income Tax Department replied to his tweet, asking Dwivedi to connect with the department through email and share the ticket number he had received.

We hope you’ll connect with us at the email ID we shared earlier ([email protected]). If so, please share the ticket number you received (or the timestamp and subject line of your email, excluding personal details). Our Team (1/2),” the Income Tax Department Replied
