British Tourist slapped with Rs.224 including GST by IRCTC for Using Toilet at Railway Station
Most travellers have used bathroom facilities at some point for a fee of Rs. 5 or Rs. 10, but for two British tourists, it turned out to be an expensive experience. They claim that the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) charged them Rs. 224 for using the Executive Lounge restroom at the Agra Cantonment railway station.
The incident was made public when travellers leaving the British Embassy in New Delhi discovered they had to pay Rs 112 each just to use the washroom at the Agra Cantt. Lounge.
After asking for directions, the British tourists’ guide, IC Shrivastava, led them to the toilet.
According to media reports, the lounge fee was combined with a Goods and Services Tax, or GST, of 12% (divided in half). This appears to be the first instance of its kind.
Although paying Rs. 112 to urinate seemed a little excessive, an IRCTC representative explained that the fee was for using the lounge’s services. The lounge manager stated that after a 50% discount, a minimum fee of Rs. 112 is required.
It comes with a free coffee, free WiFi, and up to two hours of access to the Executive Lounge room.
IRCTC has previously made headlines due to a passenger’s complaint. In the past, a man by the name of Balgovind Vertha was furious after paying Rs. 70 for a cup of tea that was originally priced at Rs. 20.
Later, the agency defended the Rs. 50 is the catering charge and the passenger was required to pay the additional service fee because he had not made a reservation for his meal.
