1. What are NIOS?

• The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an educational institution that offers courses via distance and open learning modalities and holds exams to award certificates up to the pre-degree level on par with other National Boards, such as the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

2. Which Courses Does NIOS Offer?

• The following courses and programs are provided by NIOS: The program known as Open Basic Education (OBE) consists of the following three courses: (i) OBE ‘A’ Level Course, which corresponds to class III; (ii) OBE ‘B’ Level Course, which corresponds to class V; (iii) OBE ‘C’ Level Course, which corresponds to class VIII. a) Vocational Education Courses b) Academic Courses (i) Secondary Course—Equivalent to Class X (ii) Senior Secondary Course—Equivalent to Class XII c) Initiatives for Life Enrichment.

3. What distinguishes regular education from open education?

• While Open Schooling is a flexible way to give learners self-learning and its evaluation on their own schedule, Regular Schooling is a classic face-to-face learning approach in a formal classroom setting with a strict timetable. For students who wish to continue their education while pursuing a job that pays well or who are unable to attend conventional education due to social, economic, or geographic constraints, the Open Learning system is incredibly beneficial.
