EPFO Allows Bulk UAN Generation Without Aadhaar for Special Cases
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a facility for bulk generation of Universal Account Numbers (UAN) without needing Aadhaar details in specific situations. EPFO has decided to make it easier to handle past PF contributions received from companies that earlier managed their own PF trusts but later surrendered or cancelled their exemption.
Similarly, in cases where old PF dues have been recovered through legal or recovery actions, EPFO has provided a special relaxation. In these cases, the requirement of Aadhaar for generating a Universal Account Number (UAN) has been relaxed. A new software feature has been provided to all EPFO Field Offices, allowing them to bulk-generate UANs using just the Member ID and other available details, without needing Aadhaar at this stage. This action ensures that old PF contributions can be quickly credited to members’ accounts.
But still, the UANs generated through this method will remain in a “frozen” state. They will only become fully operational after Aadhaar is linked (seeded) to the UAN. Until then, no transfer or withdrawal transactions will be allowed from these frozen accounts. This step helps in quick and accurate recording of old PF amounts while maintaining the requirement of Aadhaar for full activation of accounts. This decision has been made with the approval of the Chief Provident Fund Commissioner (CPFC).
