High-Profile Shakeup: Chartered Accountant Sworn as Delhi Police Commissioner
On August 21, 2025, (Thursday), Satish Golcha was appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner by the Ministry of Home Affairs, after a day when Delhi's Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, was attacked at a public hearing by a man from Rajkot in Gujarat. He took over 20 days after Shashi Bhushan Kumar Singh, who is the Director General of Home Guards in Delhi, was temporarily put in charge when IPS officer Sanjay Arora retired on August 1. One of the senior government officials has said that this appointment has no relation to the recent attack on the Delhi Chief Minister; the appointment was already in progress. The officer said, "Senior IPS officer S.B.K. Singh was given an additional charge while the appointment of the CP was already in the works."
The official order dated August 21, by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), stated, "With the approval of the competent authority, Sh. Satish Golcha, IPS (AGMUT:1992), presently posted as Director General (Prisons), Delhi, is hereby appointed to the post of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders."
Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch IPS officer from the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, will be appointed as the 26th Commissioner of Delhi Police. Golcha was born in April 1967 and joined the AGMUT cadre, as well as the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram cadre, in October 1992. This appointment at the respective position in the AGMUT cadre will be done after four years. The first two appointments were from the Tamil Nadu and Gujarat cadres, representing batches 2022-25 and 2021-22, respectively.
Golcha has previously worked in the role of Director General of Police in Arunachal Pradesh and also held top positions in the Delhi Police, handling both law and order and intelligence. He has also spent several years working in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and was allegedly part of the team that looked into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
In May 2024, Golcha became the Director General (DG) of Prisons, taking charge of Tihar, Mandoli, and Rohini jails. A senior prison officer said he had to deal with problems like gang activities, inmates using illegal mobile phones, and violent incidents, including the murders of gangsters Prince Teotia and Sunil Tajpuria in 2023.
Golcha replaces Singh, who was acting as commissioner for a short time. During his time, Singh told all district DCPs and SHOs to do two hours of foot patrol every day from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm to make the police more visible. He also said that every police station’s help desk should always have two officers, including one woman officer, to assist the public.
A chartered accountant posted on platform 'X', "Heartiest congratulations to my dear friend and our very own CA Satish Golcha, IPS, on being appointed as Commissioner of Delhi Police. Wishing him continued success in serving the nation with dedication and distinction."
