I-T Department Raids Wazirabad Tehsil for Unreported Property Deals Worth Thousands of Crores
The Wazirabad Tehsil Office, Gurgaon, whose total turnover is between Rs. 25,000 and 30,000, has been taken under the investigation of the Income Tax Department for not reporting proper information about High Value Transactions.
On Friday, a team of 12 members from the Income Tax Department conducted a search survey at the Wazirabad tehsil office in Gurugram. The office registers properties and handles other records of high-value property transactions in Gurgaon and even across the country.
According to officials, the I-T department is now investigating property transactions from the last six years, some of which involve amounts worth millions of rupees. The Wazirabad office brings in the highest revenue in Haryana, registering property deals worth Rs 25,000 to 30,000 crore every year. Its jurisdiction covers prime areas like Golf Course Road in Gurgaon.
On early Friday morning, the Income Tax Department conducted a survey in company with a police team and asked for access to property records. They examined documents for 13 straight hours.
An I-T department official said the tehsil office had not been sharing complete and correct information, leading to tax losses for the department. In many property registrations, PAN card details of buyers and sellers were either missing or incorrect, making it hard to collect taxes properly.
The I-T department official who was involved in the Friday survey said, "The income tax department was not receiving accurate information. Information about registrations in the teh-sil was superficial, and even when details were sent, PAN numbers were not available."
As per the rules, tehsildars must report property deals above Rs. 30 lakh to the Income Tax (I-T) department. The district revenue office also needs to give details like the names, PAN numbers, and Aadhaar card numbers of both buyers and sellers.
The I-T official said, "The disruption in sharing proper information by the revenue department about land transactions hampers our work."
As said by the officials, the search and survey was ordered by the I-T department’s intelligence and criminal investigation wing in Chandigarh after they came across a case where a farmhouse worth Rs 200 crore was registered in Wazirabad.
Apart from Wazirabad, other tehsils in Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Palwal are also being investigated. Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar said the government agency is doing its duty, and the revenue department is giving full support.
