Despite Mahavir Jayanti falling on March 31, 2026, the CBDT has directed all Income Tax offices to remain open nationwide to ensure smooth completion of financial year-end work.

Income Tax Offices to Remain Open on March 31, 2026, Despite Public Holiday
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue) has issued an order (F.N o.225/53/2024-IT A-II), dated March 18, 2026, under section 119 of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
The order says that on the day of the end of the Financial Year 2025-26, i.e., on March 31, 2026 (Tuesday), it is a public holiday due to the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti.
Consequently, to avoid bottlenecks in the completion of pending departmental works, the Ministry of Finance has decided to keep the Income Tax Offices open throughout India on March 31, 2026. These instructions have been issued under Section 119 of the Income Tax Act 1961.
The copy of the aforementioned direction has been sent to the following authorities:
- Chairman of CBDT and all Members of CBDT
- All Pr. CCSIT/DSGIT
- DGIT (Systems), Delhi & DGIT (Systems), Bengaluru
- ADG(Systems)-4 with request for uploading on the department's official website
- CIT (Media & TP), CBDT
- JCIT, Database Cell for uploading on the IRS Officers' website
- Guard file
