ITR Due Date Extended for these Tax Returns: Know More The Central Board of Direct Tax (CBDT) has recently issued an official circular dated July 28, 2025, announcing good news for taxpayers: the deadline for the processing of ITRs filed via electronic mode has been extended up to March 31, 2024. This is especially for those returns that were wrongly marked as invalid by the Income Tax Department’s Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru. The circular stated that CBDT has received numerous complaints that the CPC Bengaluru had wrongly marked some electronically filed returns as invalid due to technical issues. These mistakes affected returns from different assessment years. However, the time allowed to process these returns has already passed, the latest being December 31, 2024, for the Assessment Year 2023-24. Therefore, these returns now need to be rechecked and processed properly, as per the law.

CBDT Circular, "The matter has been considered by the Board, and it has been decided to relax the time frame prescribed in the second proviso to sub-section (1) of section 143 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (the Act), in exercise of its powers under section 119 of the Act. The Board hereby directs that returns of income filed electronically up to 31.03.2024, which have been erroneously invalidated by CPC, shall now be processed. The intimation under subsection (1) of section 143 of the Act in respect of processing of such returns shall be sent to the assessees concerned by 31.03.2026." All general rules under the Income Tax Act will be applicable to these reprocessed returns. This includes giving refunds with interest, if eligible. However, if your PAN is not linked with your Aadhaar, then you will not be issued any refund. This is based on Circular No. 03/2023 dated March 28, 2023. The chartered accountant explained, "This move uses Section 119 of the Income Tax Act to extend the deadline for processing such returns. Now, the intimation under Section 143(1) can be sent by March 31, 2026. But if PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, you won’t get any refund, even if it’s due."

The income tax department has time to process a validly filed ITR within 9 months from the end of the financial year in which it was filed.
