Numerous taxpayers are confused about the last date for filing their Income Tax Return (ITR) for the Financial Year 2025-26 (Assessment Year 2026-27). Some believe that everyone can file their return by August 31 instead of July 31. However, the deadline depends on the taxpayer’s source of income and the ITR form applicable to them.
Last year, the Income Tax Department had extended the ITR filing due date twice, once from July 31 to September 15 and a second time further to September 16, as the taxpayers were facing technical glitches in the e-filing portal while submitting their tax returns.
Filing the ITR before the deadline helps taxpayers avoid late fees and interest charges. It also allows them to carry forward eligible losses and may help in getting refunds faster. Timely filing also creates a better tax record, which can be useful while applying for loans, visas, or other financial services.
Is July 31 ITR Deadline Same for Everyone?
No, the July 31, 2026, due date for filing ITRs is not the same for everyone. This deadline applies to taxpayers whose accounts are not required to be audited. These taxpayers include salaried individuals and pensioners earning income from house property, capital gains, or other sources; the last date to file an ITR is July 31, 2026. These taxpayers generally file ITR-1 or ITR-2 forms and cannot claim the August 31 deadline.
August 31 ITR Deadline Belong to Whom?
The August 31, 2026, deadline is applicable only to taxpayers who have income from business or profession but are not required to get their accounts audited. Such taxpayers usually file ITR-3 or ITR-4 forms. However, taxpayers cannot select ITR-3 or ITR-4 just to get extra time for filing their returns.
Is There Any Extension Announced in ITR Deadline?
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has not made any extension in the ITR deadline officially. As of now, the deadline is the same, i.e., July 31, 2026. Therefore, taxpayers filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 should complete their returns on time instead of waiting until the last date.
