To enable changes in the utilities, the e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 02:30 AM on 16th September 2025." The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has also notified the ITR extension via press release. The press release was titled, "CBDT further extends the due date of filing of ITRs, which were due for filing by 31st July 2025 (already extended to 15th September 2025)." CBDT posted on platform 'X', “A record of over 7.3 crore ITRs were filed till September 15, surpassing last year’s 7.28 crore. To facilitate further filings of ITRs, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025).”
Breaking: ITR Due Date Extended, CBDT Extends ITR Due Date for AY 2025-26
As of September 15, 2025, more than 7 crore ITRs had been filed. However, several taxpayers, chartered accountants (CAs), and tax professionals approached the government, highlighting widespread disruptions faced during ITR filing, prompting social media complaints and calls for accountability from the Infosys-managed system. The government has made this one-day extension to give taxpayers last-minute relief amid portal glitches, heavy filing traffic, etc., and allow filing returns that were blocked by technical issues without imposition of late fees.
