September 16: CBDT Extends ITR Deadline by One Day Amid Portal GlitchesSeptember 16: CBDT Extends ITR Deadline by One Day Amid Portal Glitches
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Finance Ministry of India has made an official announcement regarding the extension of the income tax return (ITR) filing deadline for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26), noting technical glitches on the e-filing portal that caused server crashes, login failures, and payment errors during a surge in last-minute submissions. A short extension of one day has been made to the due date, from September 15 to 16, 2025. This extended deadline only applies to non-audit cases, i.e., for taxpayers who are not liable to get their accounts audited with the Income Tax Department.
The Income Tax Department officially announced the extension on platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), “KIND ATTENTION TAXPAYERS!
The due date for filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, originally due on 31st July 2025, was extended to 15th September 2025.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025, to 16th September, 2025.
To enable changes in the utilities, the e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 02:30 AM on 16th September 2025.”

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has also notified the ITR extension via press release. The press release was titled, “CBDT further extends the due date of filing of ITRs, which were due for filing by 31st July 2025 (already extended to 15th September 2025).”
CBDT posted on platform ‘X’, “A record of over 7.3 crore ITRs were filed till September 15, surpassing last year’s 7.28 crore. To facilitate further filings of ITRs, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025).”
As of September 15, 2025, more than 7 crore ITRs had been filed. However, several taxpayers, chartered accountants (CAs), and tax professionals approached the government, highlighting widespread disruptions faced during ITR filing, prompting social media complaints and calls for accountability from the Infosys-managed system.
The government has made this one-day extension to give taxpayers last-minute relief amid portal glitches, heavy filing traffic, etc., and allow filing returns that were blocked by technical issues without imposition of late fees.
