UGC Asks Institutions To Promote Gender Equality at Colleges and Universities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has called for the inclusion of Gender Champions in all institutions in order to promote gender equality in education.

People of any gender who are enrolled in educational institutions, including transgender individuals above the age of 16, boys, and girls, might be considered Gender Champions. It is their responsibility as responsible leaders to create an environment in their schools, universities, and other academic institutions where girls are treated with respect and dignity.

On May 29 of last year, UGC wrote a letter that was published on its official website emphasizing the need to create an environment that encourages equal treatment by involving Gender Champions in all of the nation’s educational institutions. The University has reiterated its plea that the Guidelines for Gender Champions in Educational Institutions be put into effect as quickly as feasible. UGC University and its associated colleges have the guidelines available.

In addition, the government released a Gender Champions badge that can be accessed on both its website and the My Gov platform.

UGC had previously informed about the 2009 laws aimed at reducing the threat of ragging in higher education institutions. The UGC website, www.uge.gov.in, and www.antiragging.in, both have the regulations available.

According to the authority, all institutions must comply with these norms and must take the appropriate actions to put them into effect. The UGC will take seriously any offence against the anti-ragging laws.
