The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Nidhi Tewari has been appointed as the new Private Secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The appointment was made on March 31, 2025, by the Government of India and has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, as per the official orders issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Who is Nidhi Tewari?

Nidhi Tewari is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2014 batch and has handled various high posts and essential responsibilities in her career. Since November 2022, she has been handling the post of Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Before this, she was employed in the position of Undersecretary in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs. Her career started with the clearance of the Civil Services Examination in 2013. Prior to taking the exam, she was working in the position of Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi, and she was preparing for the civil services examination simultaneously with her job.

During the period while she was employed at the position of Deputy Secretary in the PMO, Nidhi Tewari was part of the ‘Foreign and Security’ division, which falls under the authority of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. During the period, she focused on issues related to foreign affairs, nuclear energy, security matters and the state of Rajasthan. This new and essential opportunity of private secretary has been appointed to her as a result of her having more than three years of experience in the PMO.

How Was She Appointed As Private Secretary?

The procedure of choosing Nidhi Tewari as the private secretary of PM Modi was held by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). In accordance with the official memorandum issued on March 29, 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Nidhi’s appointment. Nidhi Tiwar will now serve her duty as private secretary from Level 12 of the Pay Matrix.

As a Private Secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, her responsibilities are wide and essential. The below-mentioned works will be handled by her:

Managing the daily work of the Prime Minister:

  • The daily schedule, meetings and visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be handled by her. She will need to manage his work accurately, smoothly and on time.

Policy and administrative coordination:

  • She will maintain a coordination link between PMO and various ministries, departments and other stakeholders. Her role will be crucial in executing policy decisions and tracking their progress.

Focus on foreign and security affairs:

  • As she is previously experienced, she will be required to handle matters related to foreign policy, security and international affairs. She will be providing advice and assistance to the Prime Minister in the above-mentioned areas.

Communication and confidentiality:

  • As a private secretary to PM Modi, she will be required to handle delicate and private information. All messages, correspondence and communication of PM Modi will be handled by her only, along with this assurance that all the information is private.

As an undersecretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, she worked on issues related to disarmament and international security, which are complicated and important matters.

During her time as Deputy Secretary in the PMO, she gained valuable experience in high-level administration and policy making. Her work in the foreign and security department helped her understand how to handle both national and international issues, which will be very helpful in her new role.

What is Nidhi Tewari’s Salary?

Currently, Nidhi Tewari is employed at the position of Deputy Secretary in the PMO at Level 12 of the pay matrix. She will be engaged in this role till further notice or till the end of her current employment.

As the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, Nidhi Tewari will earn a salary of Rs. 1,44,200 per month, based on Pay Matrix Level-14. In addition, she will receive extra benefits like a dearness allowance, house allowance, and travel allowance, making her total monthly salary around Rs. 2 lakh.
