Press Information Bureau (PIB) refutes social media rumours that the National Testing Agency (NTA) is a private organization exempt from the Right to Information (RTI) Act. An RTI Act fact-check conducted recently by the PIB claims that the NTA is governed by the RTI Act and that the Indian government appoints both its director general and advisory board.

A certificate of registration under the Societies Registration Act supports the NTA’s status as a private society, according to a tweet made by Go News founder and journalist Pankaj Pachauri on X, formerly Twitter. This assertion prompted the clarification. With reference to the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) scandal, Pachauri voiced worries regarding the NTA’s status and suggested that being a private society could result in a lack of public supervision and responsibility. In keeping with the law’s requirement for transparency, he emphasized that the NTA has not released any RTI responses since December 2020.

Member of Parliament P Wilson reiterated similar worries as well, claiming that the NTA may be exempt from parliamentary oversight and responsibility due to its registration under the Societies Registration Act.

It is asserted that NTA is a private entity exempt from the RTI Act (#PIBFactCheck). The RTI has jurisdiction over this #Fake @NTA_Exams allegation. The Indian government appoints the DG, NTA, and Governing Body,” PIB tweeted.

The claimed NEET and UGC-NET paper leaks have wrapped the National Testing Agency (NTA) in controversy. In addition, the NTA postponed the CSIR UGC-NET. Students are demonstrating against the NTA and the paper leaks nationwide. The CBI has gathered evidence from the Bihar Police and is presently looking into the leak claims.
