CBIC warns Fraudsters against issuing Fake and Fraudulent Summons for GST Violations

It has lately been discovered that some individuals with fraudulent intent are preparing and sending bogus summons to taxpayers who may or may not be under investigation by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.

The fake summons closely resembles the original due to the usage of the Department’s logo and Document Identification Number (DIN). However, these DIN numbers are forged and are utilised by scammers to make the document appear and feel genuine.

It is once again underlined that taxpayers can readily verify the authenticity of any communication (including Summons) issued by any CBIC official by utilising the ‘VERIFY CBIC-DIN’ window on the CBIC website.

If an individual or taxpayer discovers that the Summon/letter/Notice is forged after confirming the DIN, he or she should immediately notify the appropriate office. This will allow the competent DGGI / CGST formation to take law enforcement action against the fraudsters who used fake summons/letters/notices to defraud the people.

CBIC published Circular No. 122/41/2019-GST on November 5, 2019 about the generation and quoting of DIN on all communications sent by CBIC officers.
