As of now, 5 crore taxpayers have successfully filed their Income Tax Return (ITR), according to the Income Tax agency. In the previous financial year, a total of 7.28 crore ITRs were filed as of the due date, i.e., July 31, 2024. Due to technical problems and issues in many states, several institutions and trade groups have asked the government to extend the tax filing deadline. On Thursday, organisations like the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), the Central Council of Chartered Accountants of India (CCCAI), the Advocates Tax Bar Association (ATBA), the Bombay Chartered Accountants’ Society (BCAS), Chandigarh Chartered Accountants Taxation Association (CCATAX), and Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) sent a request to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asking for more time. So far, the government has not responded to these requests. As of now, the deadline to file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for individuals is 15th September 2025. For those whose accounts need to be audited, the deadlines are 30th September 2025 for submitting the audit report and 31st October 2025 for filing the ITR. If you miss the deadline but file your ITR before December 2025, you will have to pay a penalty: Rs. 5,000 if your income is more than Rs. 5 lakh per year and Rs. 1,000 if your income is less than Rs. 5 lakh per year.Taxpayers & Professionals are facing: ⚠️ Portal glitches 🙏 We request an extension of ITR filing due date #ITR #ITRDeadline #TaxFiling #ExtensionRequest @IncomeTaxIndia @FinMinIndia @nsitharaman#Extend_Due_Date_Immediately pic.twitter.com/QRBXoBlwHN
