CBDT Initiates Online Effort to Help Taxpayers Correct Income Mismatches
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) started an online campaign under the e-Verification Scheme, 2021. This campaign helps taxpayers correct any differences between the information shown in their Annual Information Statement (AIS) and what they reported in their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the financial years 2023-24 and 2021-22.
Especially those with high amounts of tax and high-value transactions reflected in AIS but not captured in the ITR. An SMS or e-mail would be sent as reminders for and guidance to these taxpayers; included in this also are those non-filers yet to file their ITR.
Key Points of the Initiative:
1. Identifying Mismatches: The income and transactions in the AIS are matched against the details in the ITRs. In case of any differences, alerts are generated.
2. SMS and Email Notice to Taxpayers The taxpayers and the non-filing taxpayers are being informed through their mobile phones and email.
3. Deadline for ITR Filings:
- For FY 2023-24: The due date for revised or belated ITRs is December 31, 2024.
- For FY 2021-22: The due date for furnishing new ITRs is 31st March, 2025.
