The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has secured the deportation of Sandeep Mistry from the UAE to India. Mistry, who was wanted in the Nirav Modi Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, was brought back to India after being traced and arrested by UAE authorities.

Mistry is wanted in a bank fraud case registered by the CBI’s Bank Securities and Fraud Branch (BSFB), Mumbai. The case involves fictitious international trade transactions. According to the CBI, Mistry acted as a key link between several entities and managed their day-to-day operations. He allegedly issued instructions through secret, self-deleting communication platforms to hide evidence.

The CBI has also alleged that Mistry helped prepare forged import-export documents to show fake trading activities involving diamonds, gold and pearl jewellery. He, along with other accused persons, allegedly pressured dummy directors of foreign companies by threatening them with arrest, moving them to different locations and taking away their electronic devices. They were allegedly forced to sign documents falsely showing themselves as the genuine owners of the companies.

Mistry was also allegedly involved in transferring funds from the bank accounts of dummy companies in the UAE. The CBI has already filed the charge sheet in the case before the competent court.

Mistry arrived in Mumbai at 11:55 PM on September 28, 2026. He was subsequently taken into custody by CBI officials of BSFB, Mumbai, produced before the competent court and sent to judicial custody.
