The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is prepared to expand internationally, having successfully opened a centre in Dubai and with officials from other centres eager to join it. A 10-member committee was formed in May 2024 by the Ministry of Education’s Department of School Education and Literacy to investigate the viability of CBSE’s international growth.

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Educational Testing Services (ETS), ministry, board, and private schools are represented on the committee led by the secretary of the CBSE.

“Evaluate CBSE’s brand value and organizational qualities in order to explore globalization opportunities and compete with international educational boards. Identify methods to promote CBSE as an academic destination for non-Indian students by providing customized curricula for non-STEM subjects while maintaining key STEM components” – these are some of the committee’s terms of reference.

Himanshu Gupta, secretary of the CBSE, continued, “We are carefully examining the overseas boards to find out about the finest methods. We are also investigating the potential for growth into nations in the global south. In order to support more students and international mobility, the committee is also looking at options for cooperation and mutual certification recognition.”

Currently, the board has 5.5 lakh students enrolled in 257 schools overseas. It had roughly 87 in 2007 and 199 in 2014. Saudi Arabia has 38 CBSE schools, whereas the United Arab Emirates has 107. There are two in Japan and four in Singapore, while the remaining CBSE schools are spread throughout other African nations.

Previously, Gupta had stated that the board is exploring opportunities for growth in Middle Eastern and African nations as well as creating an international curriculum and structure. To internationalize education in India and increase the number of students from outside it can attract, the National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP 2020) aims to make the Indian educational system self-sufficient and consistent with international standards and norms.

It has been requested that the committee provide a report by 15th June 2024, complete with recommendations and a thorough action plan.
