CBSE Allows Math Basic Students to Continue with Mathematics in Class 11 for 2025-26
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to continue allowing students who studied Math Basic in Class 10 to take Mathematics in Class 11 for the 2025-26 school year. However, the board has told school principals to carefully check if these students have the skills and interest needed to handle Mathematics in Class 11 before letting them choose this subject.
CBSE has made it clear that this special rule will stop working once they bring in a new study plan based on suggestions from the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE).
The board has warned that once students fill in their subject choices for the Class 10 board exam list, they cannot change these subjects later. "Schools must tell parents and students about this rule so they can make the right decisions. But remember, once you choose your subjects for the exam list, you cannot change them later."
"Before allowing Mathematics (041) in Class 11 to students who took Math Basic, the school principal must make sure that these students have the ability and interest to study Mathematics (041) in Class 11," CBSE told all schools.
CBSE Board Exam Guidelines
CBSE first started this special rule during the Covid pandemic and has continued it for the last three school years.
According to normal CBSE rules, only students who studied Math Standard in Class 10 can take Mathematics in Class 11. Students who choose Basic Math can usually only study Applied Mathematics in Classes 11 and 12.
The board explained that they created two different levels of mathematics for Class 10 starting from March 2020. Math Standard is for students who want to continue with Mathematics (041) in higher classes, while Math Basic is for students who don't plan to study mathematics at advanced levels.
