A woman who was employed under the 100-day employment scheme was surprised after getting a Goods and Services Tax (GST) notice from the GST Department asking for Rs 1.67 crore in unpaid taxes.

The woman named Kavitha lives in Velleri village near Gudiyatham in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, and has been working under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Even though she was a daily wage worker, the GST Department issued a notice to her claiming that she owes Rs. 1.67 crore in tax dues. The notice mentioned that she was registered under the name of Darshini Industries. As per the notice, the penalty has been levied for not paying GST.
