DRI Busts Codeine Cough Syrup Racket

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has impounded around 1.11 lakh bottles of cough syrups containing Codeine in two different operations in the states of Tripura and West Bengal. These seizures have been made under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985, in a move to curb the drug trafficking operations.
During the first raid on 2nd July 2026, DRI officials managed to intercept a package that was being transported through a train moving towards Agartala. The cough syrup bottles had been carefully concealed within 80 metal drums that were covered with powder to camouflage their appearance.
The raid was executed with the assistance of the RPF and the Assam Rifles. One individual who came to receive the parcel was apprehended.
In yet another raid that was conducted around the same time, officials of DRI searched a godown at Dankuni in West Bengal. 56,225 bottles of cough syrup containing Codeine, which were concealed in 104 iron barrels. The bottles were covered with a layer of China Clay powder in order to avoid detection.
Both of them, therefore, resulted in the confiscation of 111,851 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrups and the detention of one individual.
Codeine is an opium-based drug that is lawfully used in specific cough syrups under prescription. But these cough syrups are usually abused due to the fact that they may cause addiction when taken without a prescription.
As per the Drug Enforcement Administration, drug trafficking organisations are now utilising innovative ways to conceal their narcotics during transportation. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, it will keep on working through its intelligence-driven operations in order to detect and break down such drug-smuggling organisations.
