The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, has extended the due date for filing of Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and depositing statutory contributions for the wage month of September 2026 from October 15, 2026, to October 31, 2026, considering the difficulties faced by stakeholders while preparing and submitting the ECR.

This extension has been officially announced vide a circular dated October 13, 2026, to provide additional time to employers and establishments to complete their provident fund compliance requirements.

This major decision has been taken following the revision in the EPFO's wage ceiling threshold with effect from September 17, 2026, because of which establishments covered under the Code on Social Security, 2020, and the related schemes were required to make necessary changes to their payroll systems, salary calculations and employee-wise provident fund contribution records.

The organisation had received multiple representations from several employers and other stakeholders highlighting difficulties in preparing and submitting the ECR within the existing time limit. The mid-month revision required changes in payroll configurations, salary records and statutory contribution calculations, creating technical and administrative challenges for establishments.

Considering these difficulties, the EPFO has allowed establishments additional time to update their payroll systems, calculate contributions correctly and deposit the applicable statutory amounts. The extension has been approved by the competent authority under the relevant provisions of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 1952.

Accordingly, establishments can now file the ECR and deposit the corresponding statutory contributions for September 2026 on or before October 31, 2026, subject to applicable legal provisions.

The EPFO has clarified that this extension applies only to ECR filing and statutory contribution payments for September 2026. It does not extend deadlines for any other wage month or waive other statutory compliance requirements. Field offices have been directed to inform establishments under their jurisdiction about the revised deadline and facilitate timely compliance.
