Extra checks for Large Income Tax Refunds this year: CBDT Chairman
The Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Ravi Agrawal, has shared that the tax department is taking extra care as it is checking the returns in detail before crediting the refund. While speaking about the refund delays, he said that the department has found that many taxpayers are fraudulently claiming refunds. Therefore, the department is doing extra checks for the larger claims, leading to delays. However, the smaller refunds are being credited quickly.
Even with these extra checks, the CBDT is hopeful that the last two advance tax payments will help increase the total collections to meet its target of Rs 25 lakh crore in tax collections this year.
He further said that the department has also been working to reduce the number of pending tax cases, saying that around 40% more appeals have been settled than last year, and the efforts to reduce litigation are also being pushed.
Agarwal has shared that the new rules and forms for the Income Tax Bill 2025 will be introduced by January, aiming to simplify the tax filing process. He called them the Backbone of the Income Tax Bill 2025.
