The Goa Education Department took a major decision yesterday on Sunday of announcing holidays in Goa schools upto class 12th, the decision is implemented today i.e., July 15, 2024. The holidays are announced in Goa schools keeping in mind the worst weather conditions, heavy rains in the coastal state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also implemented a red alert for Goa on Monday amid heavy downpours lashing the state for the past three days. As we all know Goa is a state in India located in the coastal area, which increases the chances of natural disasters (floods) in that area. Viewing the red alert announced in the state by IMD, all Goa schools from classes 1st to 12th are closed from Monday.
The government has said that the holidays are being announced in the schools of Goa for the student’s safety. The State Education Director, Shailesh Zingde said, According to IMD, in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, Pernem in North Goa received 210 mm of rainfall, which it described as “extremely heavy”.
The Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant earlier said, “The Director of Education has been asked to issue a circular that there will be a holiday on Monday as a red alert has been declared and due to this, all the schools of Goa from pre-primary to the 12th standard will remain closed tomorrow.”
According to the reports by the IMD, on Sunday, the northern region of Gao received 210 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am. Which is considered as the extreme level as per IMD.
He further said, “All the roads are overflowed, and water has been filled everywhere. Due to this, we have declared a holiday for one day. But, it is not a government holiday, government offices and everything else will remain open as usual. My request to all the people is that there is heavy rainfall in all the places of Goa and hence one should not go out of the house without any need but only if there is an emergency work… Eighty people who were stranded at the waterfall have been rescued…”
