Government Notifies Amendments to Geographical Indications (GI) Rules, 2025
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) recently shared a notification (No. F.No. P-24027/1/2023-IPR-III) on November 3, 2025 regarding changes to the Geographic Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Rules, 2002.
The government had prepared a draft of some new rules to amend the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Rules, 2002. As required by law (under section 87(1) of the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999), through notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry dated August 11, 2025 the draft rules were published in the Gazette of India.
People were given 30 days from that date to send in their objections or suggestions about the proposed changes.
After that period ended, the Central Government reviewed and considered all the feedback (objections and suggestions) it received from the public.
Now therefore, in powers given by Section 87 of the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 (48), the central Government makes the changes to the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Rules 2002. Following are the changes:
(1) These rules will be known as the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) (Amendment) Rules, 2025.
(2) They will be effective from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
