The Union Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has approved an enhancement of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) wage ceiling from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month. More than 51 lakh employees are anticipated to fall under the scope of this mandatory EPFO coverage.

This proposal for an enhancement in the EPFO wage ceiling was given by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. According to the source, no changes had been made to the EPFO's wage ceiling for decades, i.e., from 2004 to 2014. Lastly, a change in the wage ceiling was made in September 2014 by increasing it to Rs 15,000. Now, a direct increment has been seen in September 2026, by further raising the wage ceiling to Rs 25,000.

The government has taken this major action to reinforce formalisation and advance the long-term social security vision of the nation. The move will significantly contribute to the government's initiative of Viksit Bharat@2047.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in this context has explicitly clarified that a newly joined employee at a wage exceeding Rs 15,000 per month will not be automatically considered under the EPF framework and may remain outside the mandatory provident fund, pension and associated insurance protection.

The press release states that "the approval will expand access to provident fund savings, pension protection under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and insurance protection under the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI), in accordance with the applicable scheme provisions. It will also enable the statutory contribution and pensionable-wage framework to better reflect prevailing wage levels."
