GST Appellate Authority slapped Tax Demand Notice of Crores to Airtel and SBI Life The Goods and Service Tax Appellate Authority has slapped a Rs.194 crore tax demand notice to Bharti Airtel with respect to paying GST on license fees and spectrum usage costs claimed by the Department of Telecom, according to a regulatory filing on Thursday. The matter concerns the GST Department's demand for Rs 604.66 crore in Goods and Service Tax (GST) via the reverse charge mechanism on licensing fees (LF) and spectrum usage charges (SUC) based on the Department of Telecommunications' demand note. The company filed an appeal against the summon. "On an appeal filed by the Company to Commissioner (Appeals), Central Goods and Service Tax Appellate Authority, Delhi, the Appellate Authority has passed an appeal order reducing the said demand to Rs 194 crore," according to the organization.

The company got the order on August 21, and it is currently reviewing the impact of the appeal order and will take appropriate action. SBI Life said on Thursday that tax authorities have issued a demand notice for about Rs.239.27 crore for non-payment of Goods and Services Tax (GST) for the financial year 2019-20. The Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Rohtak, Haryana, issued an order for interest and penalty to SBI Life, according to a regulatory filing. The demand notice applies to the premium's investment/savings part as well as the availability of Input Credit, it stated. The authority has issued a demand for GST, as well as the appropriate interest and penalty, for the financial year 2019-2020, it said.
