GST Officer and Advocate caught by CBI for Taking Bribe Worth Rs 1 lakh
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two persons while they were taking bribe from a private company. The arrested person includes a superintendent of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) in Uttar Pradesh. While the other arrested person is a tax lawyer who was representing the complainant in the case. Both of them were caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh for waiving the penalty on a private company.
The CGST Superintendent is being identified as Nishan Singh Malli. He works in Gajrola with additional charge in Amroha, UP. He is accused of sending a penalty notice for not filing GST returns to a businessman who runs a private company. To waive the penalty, he demanded Rs. 4 lakh along with a tax lawyer named Amit Khandelwal.
This tax advocate was representing the complainant. However, he joined hands with the CGST superintendent and forced the complainant to pay the demand of Rs. 4 lakh to the superintendent.
The complainant reached out to CBI and filed a complaint. The Agency set up a trap and caught the superintendent and the advocate red-handed while they were accepting Rs. 1 lakh as the first instalment of the total demanded amount.
