Guhawati: SGST Commissionerate Arrests Businessman In GST Evasion of Rs. 9.9 Cr

The Commissionerate of State Goods and Services Tax (SGST), Kar Bhawan, Guwahati, arrested a businessman on Tuesday, June 10, for wrongly claiming and passing on Input Tax Credit (ITC) using fake invoices. The Businessman is being identified as Varun Goyal, operator of M/s Shiv Traders.

He was arrested after the officials of the tax department carried out an investigation. During the inspection at the premises of M/s Shiv Traders, the official found incriminating documents that revealed a huge tax evasion.

During the proceedings, Goyal admitted to doing this tax evasion for financial gain. The total tax evasion on the basis of the evidence is estimated at Rs. 9.90 crore, over the financial years 2023-24 to 2025-26. This has caused a huge revenue loss to the government.

Goyal has been presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro), where the judge sent him to judicial custody until June 23. The investigation is ongoing to determine how massive the fraud is.
