I-T Deputy Commissioner and Auditor Arrested By CBI in Bribery Case
The CBI action was followed by a complaint accusing Daniel Raj, deputy commissioner of Income Tax, Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), and a private auditor - Kalyan Srinath - of allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.
The complainant claimed that Daniel Raj, in collusion with the auditor, demanded a bribe of Rs 2.50 lakh from the complainant, Balathandapani.
The income tax raided Balathandapani in 2017 and alleged that deputy commissioner Daniel had told Balathandapani that he had to pay the income tax on capital gained for an agricultural land that Balathandapani sold in 2013.
During February 2022, the deputy commissioner allegedly contacted the complainant and directed him to his office. As a result, the complainant and the auditor met with Daniel Raj and discussed the issue.
The official demanded Rs 5 lakhs from the complainant in order to turn a blind eye to this tax issue. Following negotiations, the bribe was set at Rs 2.5 lakh.
Meanwhile, the complainant approached the CBI, and the investigation agency set a trap. The complainant was instructed to take Rs 50,000 in cash and a Rs 2 lakh cheque.
CBI agents on the scene observed the auditor accepting a Rs 50,000 part payment from the complainant on the deputy commissioner's orders. The CBI was successful in apprehending both of the accused.
Furthermore, the CBI conducted searches at the premises of the accused and another person in Coimbatore, resulting in the recovery of incriminating documents and approximately Rs 5.75 lakh in cash from the deputy commissioner's premises.
The arrested suspects were brought before the Special Judge for CBI cases in Coimbatore and remanded in judicial custody until April 6.
