ICAI and CAG of India Sign MoU to Improve Public Sector Audits
In an important move to improve government auditing in India, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.
The agreement was signed through ICAI’s Committee on Public and Government Financial Management (CPGFM). It focuses on building stronger systems and training for CAG officers who audit Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
The signing ceremony was attended by Shri K. Sanjay Murthy, the Hon’ble CAG of India, and CA. Charanjot Singh Nanda, President of ICAI, along with senior officials from both sides.
Shri Murthy said that the main goal is to improve the skills of CAG officials through well-planned training programs. These trainings will help auditors stay updated with new standards, technologies, and best practices.
ICAI President CA. Nanda said the MoU is not just a partnership but a big step for the nation. He added that ICAI is committed to sharing knowledge and giving quality training to auditors.
As per the MoU:
ICAI will provide basic training to CAG officials in areas like accounting standards, auditing, and IT tools used in PSU audits.
The first batch of 50 CAG officers will begin training in May 2025 at ICAI’s Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad.
The training will be led by ICAI’s expert boards:
The MoU will be valid for three years and can be extended later. This collaboration illustrates the firm intent of both ICAI and CAG in enhancing the standard of public sector audits in India.
ICAI has a sizeable presence of more than 14 lakh students and members, 5 regional councils, 177 branches all over India, and a footprint in 85 cities in 47 countries. This collaboration shall assist in the introduction of top-class auditing acumen to the public sector of India.
By combining CAG’s authority with ICAI’s expertise, the partnership aims to build stronger, more effective audit systems for the future.
