ICAI Issues Public Advisory on Fake Communications and Impersonation Attempts.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) on 8 May issued an advisory cautioning members, students and the public against unauthorized calls, emails, WhatsApp communications and fraudulent messages being circulated in the name of the Institute. ICAI stated that certain people and entities are falsely impersonating office personnel, officials, departments, committees, regional councils and branches of the Institute to mislead stakeholders.
The Institute observed that such imposters are contacting individuals through phone calls, WhatsApp messages, emails, SMSs and other communication platforms in relation to examinations, membership matters, training, empanelment, seminars, recruitment opportunities, disciplinary matters and payments.
“Such communications are false and creating an impression that these calls/messages have been originated or authenticated and circulated with the approval of the ICAI.”
According to the advisory, fraudsters are seeking sensitive information including banking credentials, OTPs, passwords and confidential documents under the guise of official ICAI procedures. It was further noted that fake demands for payments and fees are being made through unofficial channels by creating urgency and fear of adverse consequences.
The ICAI also cautioned stakeholders against misleading study material, fake announcements and suspicious links or QR codes being circulated through WhatsApp groups, social media platforms and private messaging channels while falsely claiming association with the Institute.
Clarifying its official policy, ICAI stated that it never seeks sensitive personal or financial information through calls, WhatsApp messages, SMSs or emails. The Institute further clarified that all official communications are issued only through authorized ICAI channels and all payments relating to ICAI services must be made only through approved portals and official payment mechanisms.
“The Institute does not seek sensitive personal information such as passwords, OTPs, CVV numbers, internet banking credentials, etc. through phone calls, WhatsApp calls/messages, SMSs or emails.”
The advisory urged members, students and the public not to share confidential information with unknown persons claiming association with ICAI, not to click on suspicious links or download unverified files, and to verify all communications through official ICAI notifications and circulars. Stakeholders were also requested to immediately report suspicious communications along with screenshots, phone numbers and other details to the Institute for necessary action.
ICAI also warned that impersonation, misuse of the Institute’s name and logo, and circulation of false information are prohibited under law and may invite legal and criminal proceedings against the persons involved.
