Income Tax Department Issues on Fake IT Refund Scams The Income Tax Department has warned taxpayers on its official social media account to be careful of scams. According to their posts, scammers are reaching out to people through calls and messages. If you are expecting an income tax refund, stay alert and beware of these two scams. Beware of Scam Messages - IT Refund You have been approved for an Income Tax Refund of Rs. 15,000, and the amount will be credited to your account soon. Please check your account number: 5XXXXX6777. If it's incorrect, update your bank details by clicking the link below: https://bit.ly/20wpUUX. Beware, the Income Tax Department never contacts taxpayers through pop-up messages or links like this. Beware of Fake Refund Alerts As per the Income Tax Department’s social media post, a man lost Rs. 1.5 lakh after clicking on a fake income tax refund message. The message took him to a fraudulent app, which accessed his phone banking. The IT Department has clarified that it never calls taxpayers to ask for immediate payments. If you receive such calls, treat them as suspicious and report them to the authorities. Where to Report Fraud Messages and Emails The Income Tax Department has provided helpline numbers (1800 103 0025 and 1800 419 0025) for any help or to report scams. If you receive a suspicious email or find a website pretending to be from the Income Tax Department, forward it to [email protected]. You can also send a copy to [email protected] to report it.
