Correct Errors in Your AY 2023-24 Tax Return, Income Tax Portal Now Accepting Requests

The Income Tax Department has made it easier for taxpayers to correct mistakes in their filed tax returns. Now, you can submit rectification requests to the Assessing Officer (AO) for up to Assessment Year (AY) 2023-24 (Financial Year 2022-23) through the e-filing portal. This new feature, which was introduced in January 2025, helps individuals whose tax returns were not being processed properly by the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) because of some minor mistakes.

Key Benefits of This Feature

According to income tax regulations, the Central Processing Centre (CPC) does ITRs within nine months from the end of the financial year. But sometimes, the record errors result in errors in calculating taxes. This rectification facility assists taxpayers in correcting these errors promptly without resorting to long legal processes.

Common Mistakes You Can Rectify

You can use the rectification feature to correct mistakes in your tax return that are clearly visible in the records. These include:

  • Deductions Not Allowed: If you claimed deductions in your original or revised tax return, they were not considered during processing.
  • Tax Credit Errors: If you correctly reported TDS, TCS, Self-Assessment Tax, or Advance Tax, but these were not included while processing your return.

This feature helps taxpayers fix such errors quickly through the e-filing portal.

If a mistake requires additional proof or explanation, a rectification request cannot be availed. For such instances, other forms of dispute resolution mechanisms have to be pursued.

Steps to Request a Tax Return Rectification Online

In the event that any errors need to be corrected on your tax return, you may seek a rectification from your Assessing Officer (AO) through the following easy steps:

Step 1: Go to the Income Tax E-Filing Portal, visit https://eportal.incometax.gov.in and log in with your credentials.

Step 2: Access the Rectification Option, then click on the ‘Services’ tab and select ‘Rectification.’

Step 3: Submit a New Request, choose ‘Request to AO seeking rectification,’ then click on ‘New Request’ to start your application.

This initiative makes it easier for taxpayers by reducing delays and quickly resolving minor tax mistakes. Taxpayers are encouraged to use this feature to correct errors easily and stay compliant with tax rules.
