An Income Tax Officer Arrested for Forcefully Demanding Money from a Businessman in Delhi A man named Deepak Kashyap entered the Income Tax Department in 2012 as a stenographer, who was later promoted to the post of personal secretary. On Saturday, he was arrested by the Delhi Police, about two years after he is said to have planned an extortion attempt on a businessman in the capital. As per the police, Kashyap was first arrested in 2023 along with his group of associates. They travelled to the businessman's house, saying that they were performing an Income Tax raid. DCP (Crime) Aditya Gautam said, "On August 8, 2023, the accused entered the Janakpuri residence of a businessman who owns an elevator and escalator manufacturing company. His wife was the only one present at the house. She informed him that seven unknown individuals, including a woman, had forcibly entered their residence, claiming to be from the Income Tax Department." The accused supposedly held the businessman’s wife, took away her phones, and stopped her from contacting anyone. Following Kashyap’s orders, they called the businessman to come to his house right away to make a "deal." DCP Gautam said, "Using his official knowledge and position as leverage, Deepak assembled a group of accomplices-posing as Income Tax and government officials, to lend legitimacy to their unlawful operation. He was arrested in August 2023 but released on bail." Further said, "Accused Deepak Kashyap is a resident of Mandawali Fazalpur, Delhi, and has been serving in the Income Tax Department since 2012. He initially joined as a stenographer grade-II and was promoted to grade-I in 2018, before eventually being elevated to the post of personal secretary." On November 8, 2023, the Dwarka court declared Kashyap a proclaimed offender when he skipped bail and did not appear in court. On Saturday, a team from the Crime Branch, led by ACP Ramesh Lamba and Inspector Pankaj Malik, got a tip about Kashyap being in the Subzi Mandi area of Delhi. They set up a trap and caught him.
