Indian Travellers Can Now Pay at 4.5 Million Merchants in Cambodia
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been actively working on a project to interlink the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with fast payment systems of other countries to promote cross-border payments.
This is made to help tourists in making international payments quicker, cheaper, easier, and more transparent.
These initiatives are aligned with the G20 Roadmap for enhancing cross-border payments, with a focus on cheaper, efficient, more transparent, and more accessible payments.
India and Cambodia are working to connect their payment systems to allow UPI transactions at merchants in Cambodia that accept QR codes.
It is the first phase of a partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Acleda Bank Plc. The initiative will enable Indian customers to make QR code-based payments directly to merchants in Cambodia, helping to make cross-border payments more easy and seamless.
With this new connection, Indian travellers in Cambodia can now use their UPI apps to make QR-code payments at more than 4.5 million merchants that accept KHQR, Cambodia’s national QR payment system.
In the next phase of the project, travellers from Cambodia will also be able to use their local payment apps to make UPI QR-code payments at merchants across India, making payments easier and more convenient while visiting the country.
