ITR Filing Deadline Approaching: Only 4 Days Left! Why Taxpayers Should Not Wait for an Extension Only four days are left to approach the due date to file the Income Tax Return (ITR), i.e., September 15, 2025. Numerous taxpayers are still due to file their returns, awaiting the government (CBDT) to extend the due date. Previously, the CBDT had already extended the due date for taxpayers who are not liable for their accounts to get audited (non-audit cases) from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26).
BJP CA Cell Requests Extension of Due Dates for Tax Audit Reports and ITR for AY 2025-26
Several tax experts, professionals, chartered accountants, and associations have tried approaching the finance minister and CBDT, requesting to extend the due date for ITR (Income Tax Return) for both audit and non-audit cases and TAR (Tax Audit Report) filing for financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26), citing many problems or issues that arose this year that ultimately restricted the ITR filing process. These problems include delays in utilities and return form availability, glitches in the income tax portal, mismatches between Form 26AS and AIS, the changed format of reporting for non-corporate entities, the timing of the festival season, the extension of the due date for non-audit cases, shortened time for audit work, overlap with other compliances, etc.

As only 4 days are left, the deadline is approaching day by day, and the government has not made any official confirmation regarding the ITR due date extension, taxpayers are advised not to wait till the last date and finish filing their ITR as soon as possible. According to past financial years, generally several issues or glitches are noticed in the Income Tax Portal during peak days of ITR filing, even website crashes, due to simultaneous submission of ITRs on the due date. The data till September 07, collected from the Income Tax Portal, says more than 4.89 crore taxpayers have successfully filed their income tax returns (ITRs). In the previous year, 2023-24, a total of 7.28 crore ITRs were filed.
