JNU Student Union Election to be Held in April by University Dean of Students
On Tuesday, Student leaders at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) said that the student union elections at the varsity are anticipated to occur in the last week of April. In a letter to the JNUSU General Secretary, the Dean of Students (DoS), Manuradha Chaudhary confirmed that the University General Body Meeting (UGBM) could be held by the departing students’ union to select members for the Election Committee.
The university has also said that it will begin the formation of a Grievance Redressal Cell (GRC) to manage election-related complaints and ensure compliance with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
The RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has also held a meeting with DoS earlier regarding the smooth conduction of elections and hostel allotments.
In that meeting, the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) accepted that Dos has guaranteed them that from the first week of April, the Barak Hostel will be given to students. However, mess and Wi-Fi facilities will stay unavailable initially.
ABVP also claimed that their efforts directly resulted in the issuance of the election notification.
JNUSU President and AISA leader Dhananjay charged the administration with showing favouritism while reacting towards development, “We have been protesting in the DoS office for ten days to get the election notification released, yet the administration met ABVP before issuing it. This exposes the nexus between ABVP and the university,” he said to PTI.
Dhananjay mentioned that talks were ongoing among Left-leaning student groups such as AISA, AISF, and SFI about the possibility of a united front against ABVP.
JNUSU President Dhananjay and ABVP’s Rajeshwar Kant Dubey both have confirmed that elections will take place in the last week of April, after the completion of General Body Meetings by various departments (schools) to nominate representatives for the 50-member Election Commission.
