NCERT's Political Science Textbooks: Key Changes

The major changes for NCERT Political Science Textbook is described below-

The demolition of Ayodhya and Babri Masjid-

  • The chapter titled “Recent Developments in Indian Politics” no longer makes mention of the “Ayodhya demolition.” The Ayodhya Babri Masjid’s demolition was already addressed in the textbook. The incident is no longer specifically mentioned in the updated edition. Although the NCERT refrained from offering an official explanation, it seems that they deliberately chose to avoid bringing up controversial historical moments.

Riots in Gujarat-

  • The Changes were also made to the chapter about the Gujarat riots of 2002. “More than 1,000 persons, mostly Muslims, were massacred during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002,” the original text said. The amended version now says, “During the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002, more than 1,000 people were killed.”

Politics of Hindutva-

  • All mentions of Hindutva have been removed. The sensitive nature of this phrase, which denotes a certain form of Hindu nationalism, is reflected in its exclusion. The NCERT’s choice is in line with the way politics are changing and the demand for fair discussion in curriculum materials.

The Merger of Manipur-

  • Additionally, the mention of Manipur’s union with India has been modified. The Maharaja of Manipur signed a merger deal without consulting the Legislative Assembly, which was elected by the people. This was made clear in the previous edition. According to the amended language, the Maharaja was convinced to sign the agreement by the Indian government. This modification takes into account the historical subtleties and intricacies underlying Manipur’s incorporation.

Kashmir Under Pakistani Occupation (POJK)-

  • The original text made reference to India’s contention that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POJK) is an illegally occupied region. The updated text makes it clear that Pakistan is occupying Indian territory illegally. This is consistent with the Indian government’s official position as of right now.
