New FASTag Rules to Come Into Effect From Today, Things Users Must be Aware Of New FASTag Rules 2025: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced some new regulations for toll collection called New FASTag Rules, scheduled to come into effect from today February 17, 2025. The main motive for this change is to improve the toll payment efficiency and reduce fraud in the market. However, disobeying these rules may lead to users being charged double toll fees. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) released an official circular on January 28, 2025, stating, "Transactions that are presented shall be validated based on reader read time and the time at which the tag is placed under hotlist/low balance/blacklist. Transactions presented on tags which are not active for more than 60 minutes prior to reader read time and up to 10 minutes after reader read time shall be declined with reason code 176 ...This shall be implemented effective February 17, 2025".

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) introduced FASTag Rules 2025 lists mentioned below:
  • Blacklisted FASTags: The newly released rules say, if the FASTag is blacklisted at the time of scanning, the toll payment will be declined. The payment will not be processed if the tag was blacklisted at least 10 minutes before reaching the toll.
  • Grace Period: Users are now being given 60 minutes of grace period to rectify their FASTag status before crossing a toll booth.
  • Blacklisting impact: Upon reaching the toll, if the FASTag gets blacklisted, the user will then need to pay double the toll charges. However, if a successful recharge is being done within 10 minutes of stage scanning, the penalty will be refunded back to the candidate if the request is made.
  • Delayed Transactions: If toll transactions are processed for more than 15 minutes after the vehicle crosses the toll reader, the FASTage users may charged extra.
  • Chargebacks: Banks are only allowed to charge raise chargebacks for incorrect deductions due to blacklisted or low-balance FASTags after a 15-day cooling period.
