No GST Rate Cuts Till GOM Reports to GST Council: MOSF
During a session in the Lok Sabha, a Member of Parliament named Shri Ujjwal Raman Singh asked a few questions (Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 180) from the Government of India, on July 21, 2025. The questions were regarding "Reduction in GST Rates". Here is the Government's reply to those questions.
Questions Asked in Lok Sabha:
Below are stated the questions asked by Shri Ujjwal Raman Singh in Lok Sabha:
"Will the Minister of FINANCE be pleased to state:
(a) Whether it is true that the Government proposes to reduce GST rates to provide relief to the common man.
(b) If so, the percentage of GST rate proposed to be reduced by the Government.
(c) Whether the reduction is likely to be implemented with immediate effect; and
(d) If so, the details thereof?"
Answers to Lok Sabha Questions:
Below are the answers given by the Government of India to the questions asked by Shri Ujjwal Raman Singh in Lok Sabha:
(a) In response, the Government of India explained that any decision to change GST rates does not lie with the central government alone. Instead, such decisions are made based on recommendations from the GST Council, which is a constitutional body that includes members from both the Central Government and State/UT Governments.
The Minister informed the House that in the 45th meeting of the GST Council, which took place on September 17, 2021, a Group of Ministers (GoM) was formed. This group was assigned the task of studying the existing GST structure and suggesting changes to simplify and adjust the tax rates, a process called GST Rate Rationalisation. However, as of now, the Group of Ministers has not yet submitted its report to the GST Council.
(b) to (d) Because of this, the other questions raised about the percentage of rate reduction, whether it will be implemented immediately, and the details of such changes do not apply at this stage, the Minister said.
