With July 31 fast approaching, taxpayers are eagerly awaiting an ITR due date extension, but experts advise filing returns on time, as CBDT has issued no extension notification.
Over 5 Crore ITRs Already Filed for AY 2026-27

As per the information available on the income tax portal, more than 5 crore taxpayers have already filed their income tax returns (ITRs) for the financial year 2025-26 (assessment year 2026-27). However, there are still crores of taxpayers due to file their tax returns. For most of the taxpayers, the due date to file ITR is July 31, 2026.
As the deadline is approaching, the speculation among the taxpayers regarding the extension has intensified. However, tax experts suggest that there may not be any extension in the ITR due date this year.
Consequently, they are advising taxpayers to complete the filing process on time. Even the Income Tax Department itself is also urging taxpayers to do the same.

Will ITR Due Date Be Further Extended Beyond July 31?
With less than 48 hours left before the ITR filing due date, a common question is arising in the minds of several taxpayers: Will the Income Tax Department extend the ITR filing deadline beyond July 31 for the AY 2026-27? As of now, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has not released any official confirmation regarding the ITR due date extension. Hence, taxpayers have been asked to assume July 31, 2026, as the final date to submit tax returns and avoid waiting until the last moment.
