Several taxpayers make mistakes while filing their tax returns, as they are not aware of the proper procedure for filing, which ultimately leads to penalties, notices, and prolonged litigation.

Consequently, here we have provided the step-by-step procedure to file an income tax return online on the e-filing portal:

Step 1: Visit the official income tax portal at https://www.incometax.gov.in.

Step 2: Log in using your PAN (as user ID) and password.

Step 3: On the homepage, click on the ITR Filing Section, and thereafter click on 'e-File' > 'Income Tax Returns' > 'File Income Tax Return.'

Step 4: Select the relevant assessment year for filing the tax return, i.e., AY 2026-27. After that, select online mode, and then click on 'Continue.'

Step 5: Select the correct ITR form as per your income source (ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR-7).
