PFRDA  Announces New Rules for Closing NPS Accounts: What Account Holders Need to Know

If you’ve given up your Indian citizenship and don’t have an OCI card, there are new rules about your National Pension System (NPS) account.

What’s Changing

According to the PFRDA (April 21, 2025):

If you’ve officially given up your Indian citizenship and don’t have an OCI card, you must immediately inform the NPS Trust. Your NPS account will be closed. All your pension money will be transferred to your Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) bank account

What You Need to Do

  • Tell the NPS Trust right away about your citizenship change
  • Provide proof that you’ve given up your Indian citizenship
  • Submit an application to close your NPS account with:
  • A signed statement confirming you’ve given up Indian citizenship and don’t have an OCI card
  • Official proof like a certificate of renunciation, surrender certificate, or your cancelled Indian passport
  • After verification, the NPS Trust will close your account and move your funds to your NRO account.

Background Information

Giving up Indian citizenship means officially ending your Indian nationality, usually after becoming a citizen of another country. As India does not allow dual citizenship. NPS accounts can be opened by Indian citizens who are between 18 and 70 years old, as well as NRIs and OCIs who meet certain conditions
