RBI Releases 2025 List of Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently released its 2025 list of Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs), which includes some of the biggest banks in India. For 2025, the same three banks as in 2024 State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank, have been identified as D-SIBs. Following is the list of D-SIBs Banks:
Bucket Bank(s) Additional CET1 requirement as a percentage of Risk Weighted Assets (RWAs)
5 1%
4 State bank of India 0.80%
3 0.60%
2 HDFC Bank 0.40%
1 ICICI Bank 0.20%
HDFC Bank Penalised by RBI for Irregular Benchmarking, Subsidiary Operations, and KYC Lapses
The RBI has a framework, first issued in 2014 and updated in 2023, to identify very large and important banks in India called Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs). Under this framework, the RBI must publish the names of such banks every year and place them into different categories based on how important they are. The more important a bank is, the more extra safety capital (CET1) it must keep as a cushion against financial stress. For foreign banks operating in India that are considered Global Systemically Important Banks (G-SIBs) in their home countries, they also need to keep extra CET1 capital in India, but only in proportion to the size and risk of their Indian operations.
